Project Title: The Interruption of Contemporary Fiction’ (JM Coetzee, Ali Smith, Tom McCarthy, Zadie Smith).

Supervised by Professor Peter Boxall.

My thesis looks to construct an understanding of enchantment in contemporary fiction, with particular attention to writing by Nicola Barker, J. M. Coetzee, Toni Morrison and Ali Smith. I am interested in how the use of a magical idiom (mystery, illusion, concealing and revealing) in the novel speaks to the critical histories of enchantment and demystification as interpretative methods, and how this might inform narratological ideas about fictionality.
