Thought & Image:  Processes of Reciprocity

Second session 23 March 1600-1900 | Goldsmiths, University of London | MRB Screen 1

For our second event, Aura Satz will trace the research for Between the Bullet and the Hole, a film centred on the elusive and complex effects of war on women's role in ballistic research and early computing. She will discuss the methodological shifts that have led her to where she finds herself working today

Aura Satz is a London based artist known for her archaeological forays into sound and image producing technologies.  She investigates and re-imagines technology in its fullest sense, very much including the labour, imagination and experimentation involved in their invention that often reveals pioneering work by women.  The heightened perception and sensory disorientation that characterise modern technological media at their inception become a creative methodology in her hands as she charts new trajectories for their sensuous capacities.  A recipient of numerous awards and residencies, she works in a range of mediums from sound and film to sculpture and performance. She is currently a Reader in fine Art at the Royal College of Art.

The process by which an idea becomes an image and an image an idea is by no means straight forward, nonetheless this alchemy is the key task Audio Visual PhD students must perform.  We are happy to announce this programme of Master Classes with leading artists who will talk about the generation of ideas and artworks in their current practice. By taking advantage of the collaborative nature of this venture between Goldsmiths,  LUX and Birkbeck we will present a wide variety of subjects and approaches from both UK and internationally based artists.  whose varied access to local and international artists. The series is funded by a CHASE post-graduate training grant to produce six events in this academic year.
