Project Title: The Single Woman Author in Contemporary American Film 1990-2015
My doctoral project studies the culturally laden figure of the single female author as represented in Anglophone film and television since 1990. The striking prevalence of fictionalised representations of this figure across genres and media seems driven by both a fascination with, and fear of, her perceived potential to disrupt. This twin pull has both reflected, and contributed to, broader contemporary debates about the cultural status of real-world female writers. My study will historicise and interrogate a perceived draw both to genericise and suspect this figure.
