Latin for Early-Modernists

  • University of East Anglia (map)

In the medieval and Early-Modern periods, in particular, the ability to move with confidence between Latin and vernacular material is invaluable. This two-part residential course will provide you with the tools required to read and understand the Latin texts relevant to your research at a deeper level and will allow you to explore the challenges of working with Classical, medieval and Renaissance Latin materials over the course of the academic year.

The days will be divided between detailed study of Latin grammar in the mornings, followed by the study of selected extracts from Latin literature in the afternoon. Part of the afternoon sessions will be student-led: each attendee introducing an extract from their own research and leading the group’s translation and discussion of this. In between the two residential sessions, training will continue online through the sharing of translations and exercises. This is initially an introductory course, so beginners, as well as those more familiar with Latin, are very welcome to attend.
