Celebrate 10 years of collaboration between the British Library and the Dunhuang Academy

The International Dunhuang Project (IDP), is a groundbreaking international collaboration to make information and images of all manuscripts, paintings, textiles and artefacts from Dunhuang and archaeological sites of the Eastern Silk Road freely available.

This lecture considers the challenges faced by cultural institutions to preserve fragile heritage as demand increases. The Buddhist murals at the Dunhuang cave sites date from the 4th or 14th century and comprise over 50,000 square metres of paintings. But they are in small enclosed spaces and the increasing number of visitors to this UNESCO World Heritage site - estimated to reach one million in 2016 -  is a peril to their survival. Wang Xudong introduces the site and it wonderful paintings and considers the plans implemented over the past few years by Dunhuang Academy to ensure their preservation.
